R. Lopez de Heredia
A Profile in Tradition…
In March I was indeed fortunate to be able to visit the highly esteemed Rioja Bodegas, J. Lopez de Heredia. My time with the owner
Maria José and her unfailingly kind and helpful export director, Maria Vicente, provided me a splendid and highly enjoyable insight
to this marvelous family run and historic estate.
Tondonia vineyards comprise some 70% of the total Lopez Heredia vineyards with an average of 100 year old vines. The remainder
comprised of Bosconia and Gravonia. Tondonia, gloriously and predominately Tempranillo, ages magnificently; the 1982 Reserva
tasted with Maria José and Maria Vicente at lunch showed beautifully; elegant and still youthful, with years ahead of it. The epiphany,
however, was the 1975 Tondonia White Reserva. Glorious, still fresh, exotic, and displaying an amazing array of fruit and spice that
seem to evolve and change with each sip…. Wow!
Now I get it.
